Are E-girls and Scammers the same thing?
Join Emma as she interviews Calla, a popular online gamer, to find out the true meaning of an E-girl. The question is, are they ruining gaming for other women, or are they just doing what they deem necessary to survive in this competitive market, and just how lucrative is it?
E-girls are a youth subculture of Gen z that emerged in the late 2010s. However, the name has very commonly been used as a pejorative against women perceived to be seeking out male attention. Videos by E-girls tend to be flirtatious and overtly sexualised. Some attempt to use this behaviour to entrap men into a financial downfall, at least that is how the men would describe it. These descriptions are the common definitions of E-girls made by men, but how would they define themselves. We interviewed Calla, a popular E-girl, to find out. When asked to define an E-girl, she said the following, ‘I think the true definition of the word has been misconstrued over time by men who think they know everything. The true definition of an E-girl is simply a girl that plays videogames’. When asked what she would refer to herself as, she said ‘I would call myself an E-thot. I know the term may sound derogatory, but it is simply more accurate to my line of work’.
We then asked her to elaborate on what she meant by work, and she told us ‘I earn money from being an E-thot, and don’t have a full-time job outside of it. I use Only Fans and Twitch, and occasionally will get a parttime job if it comes to it, but this is my main source of income, so I do consider it to be my job’. When asked whether she liked what she does, she told us ‘It can be really difficult at times, quite a few people are against everything I do, and sometimes the hate really gets to me. But most of the time I am able to brush it off and continue what I do, and I love it. I makes me feel so free, like I am my own boss. I don’t have to meet any quotas or write long winded essays; I can simply do what I enjoy. Who wouldn’t want that?’. As very clearly explained, she finds her line of work to be a very legitimate form of income, and that it should be more respected. So I have to admit, E-girls are not scammers, they are just people trying to get by.
